Seeking a creative escape from work-place stress? What could be more liberating than drifting towards the heavens in a wicker basket under a wisp of nylon.  Now in its 35th year, the Bristol Balloon Fiesta brings together some of the world’s most skilful balloon pilots in a four-day show-stopping spectacle as part of Europe’s largest hot air balloon event.

The event kicks off at dawn each morning with a mass balloon ascent, (the world’s second largest after Albuquerque, USA).  Gallons of coffee and mounds of mouth-watering bacon sarnies are wolfed down as anxious spectators wait for wind speeds and directions to be checked before take-off is granted.  Being completely at the mercy of the elements, there are no guarantees as to whether any events will take place.

Once the all clear is given, with a blast of propane, the balloons burst into life.   As the parachutes take shape, some familiar characters vie for attention.

Now ignited, the balloons start slowly climbing higher as they skilfully veer away from others in their path until they become mere specs in the sky.

The highlight of the fiesta is the evening nightglows.  As night falls, tethered balloons are illuminated like giant lanterns against a backdrop of rousing music and fireworks displays. (Check website for dates.)
